When you purchase Rainbow Play outdoor swing sets, you are making an environmentally responsible choice. We are proud to use America’s greatest renewable resource and continue the cycle of life.
Here are 3 ways Rainbow is green:
Discarded wood material is used in production at Rainbow, or recycled.
For every tree harvested, five new trees are planted in its place.
Our wood material suppliers must adhere to one of two major forest initiatives.
The two major forest initiatives are:
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) which calls for third-party inspections of forestlands for sustainability and habitat use.
Mill certification which identifies timber that has been approved to be harvested under an agreement reached in cooperation with scientists, environmental groups and foresters so as not to harm watersheds or wildlife habitats, erode the soil or over harvest an area.
At Rainbow’s factory, which is the largest playground factory in the world, we do not discard any scraps carelessly. All “waste” or discarded wood material is used in production at Rainbow, or is recycled in some manner. While, the larger pieces are milled and reused, the smaller pieces are sent through the chipper to make landscape mulch. The sawdust that is produced during production is shipped into Minnesota where it is used for poultry bedding. Once the bedding has been discarded it returns back into the soil when it is used as fertilizer.
* Did you know that Cedar and Redwood absorbs and traps carbon dioxide keeping it out of our atmosphere for the lifetime of the product?!

Cedar or Redwood
Most families only purchase one play set for their backyard so choosing the right play set made to last for many years is important. For many years premium play set manufacturers all used redwood because it is superior in durability, beauty, strength, and resistant to outdoor elements. With the increase in the cost of redwood, most play set manufacturers have looked for alternative woods to use in their manufacturing process. Rainbow’s new Cedar Collection offers swing sets at a more affordable price that also maintain quality.
Most outdoor products, including swing sets, are made out of softwoods such as Redwood, Cedar, and Pine. These softwoods can further be divided into 2 categories: those that are naturally decay resistant, and hence require no chemical additives to keep them from rotting, and those that are not naturally decay resistant and hence require chemical additives to keep them from rotting.
Redwood, Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Pacific Cedar are Woods from the Cupressaceae or Cypress family and all are naturally decay resistant.
Our Value Series (Fiesta and Carnival Series) are made with 100% solid Premium Cedar.
Our Deluxe Series (Sunshine, Rainbow, Monster and King Kong Series) are made in the USA with 100% solid Premium Cedar.
Swing sets from our Cedar Deluxe Series are also available in 100% California Redwood by Special Order. For swing sets made of Redwood please contact us for pricing.
Pacific Cedar (Cunninghamia Lancelota) carries many of the same characteristics of Redwood and Cedar, being naturally bug and decay resistant. It is a close cousin to the popular western red cedar and yet its grain and texture are closer to Douglas fir. The price of Chinese Cedar is lower than many other premium lumbers due to its shorter maturity life (15-20 years) compared to Western Red Cedar and Redwood. They are native to China, Taiwan, northern Vietnam and Laos, where they may reach 50 m in height.
Redwood has been used for years in outdoor applications and is a great wood to use for play sets. The weather has very little effect on the heartwood and doesn’t require a stain or seal to hold up to the elements. It has gotten a bit more expensive in recent years, so many play set providers have looked at other woods that are similar in properties, but may be a little more cost effective.
It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 29.2 feet (8.9 m) in diameter. These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Because of its impressive resistance to decay, redwood was extensively used for railroad ties and trestles throughout California.
